OxyChem (Occidental Chemical) is publicly known as a chlorine/PVC company and subsidiary of an oil and gas company (Occidental Petroleum), but they are the largest US supplier of trichlor (trichloroisocyanuric acid) — the active ingredient in most residential swimming pool and spa disinfection tablets. In 2021, a cascade of supply chain events created the first-ever significant US pool chemical shortage: (1) the COVID pandemic drove a massive increase in residential pool construction and use as homebound Americans sought backyard recreation; (2) Hurricane Ida damaged OxyChem's Louisiana plants; (3) a prior 2020 fire destroyed a major competitor's trichlor plant; (4) chlorine supply constraints from the Texas winter freeze. Trichlor prices increased 3x-5x and pools could not obtain disinfectant tablets for months. The same chlorine that OxyChem produces for municipal water treatment (public health infrastructure) was competing with residential pool chemistry for the same production capacity. Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway holds approximately 25% of Occidental Petroleum — making the world's most famous value investor an indirect stakeholder in pool tablet supply.
