Pactiv originated as Tenneco Packaging (the industrial packaging division of Tenneco auto parts company), which was spun off in 1999 and renamed Pactiv — it carried the Hefty trash bag and Pactiv foodservice brands. Evergreen Packaging was the former container business of International Paper, which included the legacy Pure-Pak gable-top carton franchise — a format invented by John Van Wormer in 1915.
