PCBL Chemical Limited (NSE: PCBL), formerly Phillips Carbon Black Limited, began as a joint venture between the RP Goenka Group and Phillips Petroleum Company (USA) in 1960 — one of the early technology transfer arrangements that gave Indian industrialists access to American chemical process technology in the post-independence era. Phillips Petroleum provided the furnace carbon black process technology and the "Phillips" brand association; the Goenka family provided capital and market access. After Phillips exited the joint venture, the company became fully Indian-controlled and eventually renamed to PCBL Chemical to remove the American brand heritage from its identity. It is now part of the RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group (RPSG), an Indian conglomerate that also owns Saregama India (one of India's oldest music label companies with one of the world's largest Hindi film music archives), Spencer's Retail (Indian grocery chain), and Firstsource Solutions (BPO). PCBL is India's largest carbon black producer, supplying the domestic tire industry (Apollo, MRF, CEAT, JK Tyre) with the reinforcing black that makes Indian tires competitive — a legacy Cold War-era technology transfer deal that evolved into a $600M+ revenue industrial chemicals business within a diversified entertainment and retail conglomerate.
