Penagos's Ecopulper, originally designed for coffee cherry pulping (removing the outer fruit skin and mucilage from the coffee parchment seed), uses the same centrifugal mechanical friction pulping principle for cacao pod processing (separating cacao beans from the pod pulp before fermentation). Penagos Hermanos & Cía was founded in 1960 in Bucaramanga, Santander, Colombia by the Penagos family as a small metalworking and agricultural machinery company serving Colombia's Andean coffee-growing departments (Santander, Boyacá, Norte de Santander). Over six decades, Penagos became the dominant equipment supplier for Colombian smallholder coffee farmers' wet processing operations. Their breakthrough product — the Ecopulper — was developed in response to Colombian environmental regulations restricting coffee wet-mill effluent (coffee pulp water is highly oxygen-depleting and devastated Andean stream biology when discharged untreated from traditional wet mills). The Ecopulper uses mechanical friction to remove mucilage from coffee parchment without fermentation or large water volumes, reducing per-unit water consumption by approximately 90% versus traditional wet milling. Penagos's environmental innovation became a commercial export product — their equipment is now used in coffee-growing countries across Latin America, Africa, and Asia.
