Pentair's Lakos centrifugal separators (since 1972, Fresno CA) solve a problem most people have never considered: irrigation water that looks clean can contain enough sand and grit to destroy a drip filter within weeks. Lakos separators spin water at high velocity so sand exits through a purge valve before even reaching the disc or screen filter — removing 98% of particles >74 microns with no filter media, no backwash, and no maintenance. They are standard equipment on virtually every California agricultural pump station.
