Origin2023
X-Flow membrane technology originated from membrane science research at the University of Twente in Enschede, Netherlands — one of Europe's leading engineering and science universities with a globally recognized membrane science department. The University of Twente membrane group, led by researchers including Matthias Wessling, developed hollow fiber PVDF and PES (polyethersulfone) membrane fabrication processes that became the basis for X-Flow's commercial membranes. X-Flow was established as a commercial company to manufacture and sell these academic research outputs, and was later owned by Norit N.V. (a Dutch activated carbon and water treatment company) before being acquired by Pentair in 2011. Pentair is a Minnesota-based water treatment company (NYSE: PNR) whose portfolio spans from X-Flow's industrial hollow fiber membranes to swimming pool pumps and residential water softeners — an unusually broad range from large-scale municipal water infrastructure to consumer backyard pool equipment. The University of Twente's membrane research that underpins X-Flow's UF hollow fiber technology has also contributed to the academic training of membrane scientists who have gone on to work at DuPont FilmTec, Hydranautics, Veolia, and other global membrane manufacturers, making the Enschede university membrane program a disproportionate contributor to global water treatment technology development.
