Origin2023
Perpetua Resources' Stibnite Gold-Antimony Project in Valley County, Idaho is located on the site of a WWII-era antimony mine. The US government mined antimony at Stibnite during WWII because antimony was a critical material for bullets (hardening lead), flame retardants, and military equipment. The WWII mining left significant environmental contamination in the Salmon River watershed that federal regulators have required Perpetua to remediate as part of the mine permitting process -- a novel arrangement where a new mining permit requires cleaning up 1940s-era federal war production contamination. The DoD provided Perpetua with a Defense Production Act Title III loan (announced 2024) to accelerate development because China's 2024 antimony export controls eliminated Chinese antimony from US defense supply chains. An Idaho company is remedying 80-year-old federal government mining contamination with DoD funding specifically because the geopolitics of 2024 recreated the 1942 supply emergency that caused the original contamination.
Perpetua Resources Corp. ↗Did you know2023
Perpetua Resources' Stibnite project will produce both gold (a monetary/investment commodity) and antimony (a critical defense material) from the same ore body -- the project is commercially viable primarily because of the gold by-credit, which subsidizes the antimony production that the DoD specifically requires. Without the gold value, the antimony alone would not justify the mine development. This economic co-dependence means that US strategic antimony supply (for defense ammunition, flame retardants, and semiconductor applications) depends on gold prices remaining high enough to justify the mine's economics. A fall in gold prices could make the project economically marginal and threaten DoD's antimony supply diversification strategy -- defense supply security tied to precious metals commodity markets through the accident of geology.
