US specialty chemical company (Cincinnati OH, 2744 East Kemper Road); one of the three US domestic ADBAC/DDAC producers. Acquired Mason Chemical Company (Arlington Heights, IL) in January 2013, making it the third US domestic quat producer of record alongside Arxada and Stepan. Mason Chemical had been an original member of the ADBAC Issues Steering Committee at EPA, with registered EPA biocide product lines that Pilot inherited. Pilot produces the Nobac® BAC/ADBAC line and Mason® CS line (CSEBC-50, CSEBC-80). Additional manufacturing in Texas, New Jersey, and Mexico.

Pilot Chemical is one of only three US domestic producers of ADBAC/DDAC — the quaternary ammonium compounds that are the active ingredient in most EPA List N hospital-grade disinfectants. The US quat market is an oligopoly (Arxada, Stepan, Pilot/Mason) that serves simultaneously: hospital infection control programs, food processing sanitation (FDA-regulated), institutional cleaning product manufacturers (consumer goods), and industrial water treatment operators. During COVID-19, all four of these demand streams surged simultaneously, creating a supply crisis that revealed how few US production sites exist for these critical antimicrobials and how narrow the manufacturing base is for what most people think of as simple cleaning chemicals.

Pilot Chemical acquired Mason Chemical Company (Arlington Heights, IL) in January 2013 — Mason had been an EPA registered ADBAC producer of record since the 1990s — making Pilot Chemical the third US domestic ADBAC/DDAC manufacturer alongside Arxada (formerly Lonza) and Stepan Company. During COVID, being an EPA-listed producer of record was critical: only registered producers could legally sell to the booming disinfectant market.
