Poongsan Corporation was founded in 1968 in Seoul during South Korea's Park Chung-hee era of rapid industrial development — specifically established as a copper processing and defense materials company to support Korea's self-reliance in military supply. South Korea's defense industrialization strategy under Park Chung-hee required domestic production of ammunition brass, and Poongsan was built as part of this strategic industrial policy. The founding logic — copper alloy rolling for defense (brass ammunition) — was then extended to civilian applications (coin blanks, electronics connector strip) using the same rolling mills. The Ryu family (founder Ryu Chan Woo's descendants) has maintained control across the company's 57-year history.
