Producer
POSCO Future M Co., Ltd. (formerly POSCO Chemical)
South Korean battery materials company (KRX: 003670; HQ Pohang, South Gyeongsang; POSCO Group subsidiary; formerly POSCO Chemical, renamed POSCO Future M in 2023); produces both anode materials (synthetic and natural graphite) and cathode materials (NMC, LFP) for Korean battery manufacturers (LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI, SK On) and Tier 1 global EV makers. POSCO is South Korea's largest steelmaker (and one of the world's most efficient integrated steel producers) — its chemical/materials subsidiary POSCO Future M represents Korea's vertical integration strategy from steel into EV battery materials. The same POSCO that revolutionized Korean steel manufacturing in the 1970s-80s now makes the battery materials for Korean EV batteries competing with Chinese CATL. POSCO recently acquired stake in Pilbara Minerals (Australia) and is developing Argentina lithium resources — building a Korean-controlled battery material supply chain from mine to cell.

Did you know2024
POSCO Future M is the only major battery materials company in the world that simultaneously manufactures industrial quicklime for steelmaking and battery-grade cathode active materials for EV batteries. Its Industrial Materials division still supplies lime to POSCO's Pohang and Gwangyang blast furnaces — the same business that has existed since 1971. Its Battery Materials division (added 2010s) now supplies cathode and anode materials to LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI, and SK On. The same corporate entity that is a Korean steel industry lime supplier is also a top-tier EV battery materials company supplying the Korean battery makers who compete with CATL. POSCO's vertical integration strategy — from Pilbara Minerals lithium ore (Australia) through POSCO Future M cathode production to Korean battery cells — is a uniquely Korean attempt to replicate the Chinese mine-to-material supply chain integration.
POSCO Future M Co., Ltd. ↗Origin2023
POSCO Future M (formerly POSCO Chemical) was established in 1971 as a limestone and quicklime manufacturer serving POSCO's Pohang steelworks — blast furnaces require large volumes of lime as a flux to remove sulfur and phosphorus from molten steel. For its first 40 years, POSCO Chemical was a pure industrial lime supplier, entirely dependent on POSCO steelmaking demand. The battery materials business was started in the 2010s as POSCO group recognized that Korean battery makers (LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI) needed Korean-controlled cathode and anode suppliers. POSCO Future M's Pohang industrial campus — originally built around lime kilns for steelmaking — was repurposed for battery cathode and anode production. The steelmaking lime business and the EV battery materials business share the same Pohang address, infrastructure, and Korean industrial parent.
