Did you know2023
POSCO (through POSCO Holdings and POSCO Future M) simultaneously supplies: (1) stainless steel flat for Samsung and LG home appliances, (2) battery cathode active material for Samsung SDI and SK On EV batteries, and (3) agricultural grain through POSCO International commodity trading. The same Korean industrial holding company serves the home appliance supply chain, the EV battery supply chain, and the food supply chain simultaneously -- from Pohang, Gwangyang, and trading offices globally. A Korean government policy change affecting POSCO (which has significant Korean pension fund ownership), a natural disaster at Pohang (the city floods from typhoon-adjacent storm systems), or a POSCO corporate governance event would simultaneously affect appliance stainless supply, EV battery cathode supply, and agricultural commodity trading. The home appliance, EV, and food industries share a Korean state-linked industrial group as a common supplier that none of their procurement organizations monitor as a combined cross-sector exposure.
POSCO Holdings ↗Origin2023
POSCO (Pohang Iron and Steel Company) was established in 1968 as a Korean state enterprise with technical and financial assistance from the Japanese government -- postwar reparations money and New Japan Steel technical expertise helped build the Pohang steel complex on the east coast of Korea. POSCO went public in 2000 and was fully privatized, though Korean government pension funds retain significant shareholdings. For 50 years, POSCO was a steel company; it has spent the past decade becoming a battery materials company through its POSCO Holdings restructuring. POSCO Future M now produces cathode active material (CAM) for EV batteries; POSCO International trades agricultural commodities alongside steel; POSCO has invested in Chilean lithium brines and Australian spodumene mining. The same Pohang company that supplies stainless steel to Samsung and LG refrigerators also supplies battery cathode materials to Samsung SDI and SK On EV batteries -- serving two different Samsung Group divisions from the same Korean industrial conglomerate.
