In December 2024, PPG Industries sold its US and Canada architectural coatings business (Glidden, Olympic, PPG brand retail paint) to American Industrial Partners for $550M — sharpening its focus toward higher-margin industrial and packaging coatings. PPG simultaneously announced a $380M aerospace coatings plant in Shelby, NC. Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company (PPG) was founded in 1883 to manufacture plate glass using the newly commercialized Siemens process at a Pittsburgh PA factory. The company made plate glass for most of the 20th century -- building windows, car windshields, mirrors -- and was for decades synonymous with American flat glass manufacturing. In a remarkable strategic transformation, PPG completely exited the glass business by 1999, selling all glass operations to become a coatings-only company. The company that named itself after glass no longer makes any glass. It retained the PPG initials and the Pittsburgh identity while becoming one of the world's largest paint and coatings companies through acquisitions of Glidden (1986), Lucite (2008), Akzo Nobel's coatings businesses, and others. Today PPG's glass legacy exists only in its brand name and its NYSE ticker symbol.
