The same precision weaving/knitting/finishing competency that makes flame-resistant mattress barriers also produces surgical gowns, sterile table covers, wound dressings and masks for healthcare, carrier and scrim fabrics for fiberglass and aerospace composites, cleanroom wipes and filtration media — and during COVID it pivoted to make U.S.-made reusable PPE. One technical-textile skill spans the bedroom, the operating room and the airframe, making a little-known North Carolina converter a hidden supplier across medical, aerospace and defense.

The FR mattress-barrier business exists largely by federal fiat: since 2007 every mattress sold in the U.S. must pass an open-flame flammability test (CPSC 16 CFR Part 1633), which means essentially every mattress contains a flame-barrier fabric — and only a handful of engineered-textile converters like Precision Fabrics supply that mandated layer. A single regulation turned an obscure technical fabric into a non-negotiable component in tens of millions of mattresses a year, concentrating a compliance-critical material in a few specialists whose disruption would ripple across the entire U.S. mattress industry.
