Progress Rail acquired EMD (Electro-Motive Diesel) from private equity in 2010 — bringing the historic GM locomotive brand (founded 1922) into Caterpillar's portfolio. EMD's 710 and 1010 engine families power SD70ACe and SD70AH locomotives. Muncie IN plant is primary locomotive assembly. Also a major locomotive rebuilder (extending fleet life). EMD brand has produced locomotives since the 1920s; the iconic F-unit and SD-series locomotives transformed American freight rail. GM sold EMD to Greenbriar Equity/Berkshire Partners in 2005 after 80+ years of ownership — ending one of American manufacturing's most storied corporate relationships.

    Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD) — now owned by Progress Rail (Caterpillar) — was founded in 1922 as Electro-Motive Company and was acquired by General Motors in 1930. For 75 years under GM, EMD built both the most glamorous passenger rail of the 20th century (the streamlined Zephyr and California Zephyr, powered by EMD F-units) and the workhorses of US freight rail (the SD-series locomotives). GM's EMD locomotives killed steam power in the US, simultaneously made passenger rail beautiful and freight rail efficient, and then were sold off when GM needed cash in 2005 — ending one of American industrial manufacturing's most consequential 75-year corporate relationships. The same company that made the California Zephyr's distinctive streamlined locomotives now makes the freight locomotives hauling coal and intermodal containers under the Caterpillar corporate umbrella.
