Rain Bird was founded in 1933 in Glendora, California by Clement LaFetra and his wife Mary during the depth of the Great Depression and the height of the Dust Bowl. Clement LaFetra invented the first commercially practical rotating sprinkler head — a brass impact-driven mechanism that rotated as water pressure pushed against a spring-loaded arm. This solved the central problem of early agricultural irrigation: fixed-head sprinklers left dry spots between streams. The rotating impact sprinkler created uniform water coverage across an irrigated field for the first time. LaFetra's 1933 invention — a Dust Bowl-era response to American agricultural water crisis — became the basis for nearly every sprinkler head used worldwide for the next 90 years.
