The Reynolds Wrap brand -- synonymous for American consumers with domestically produced aluminum foil since its launch in 1947 by Richmond Virginia's Reynolds Metals Company -- is now a marketing brand on aluminum foil manufactured largely from imported aluminum and rolled at facilities that are not owned by any descendant of the original Reynolds Metals. Reynolds Metals built the consumer foil brand as a downstream value-added product to keep its aluminum smelters running at capacity during production lulls. When Alcoa acquired Reynolds Metals in 2000 and then divested the consumer products business through a series of transactions, the Reynolds brand separated from any upstream aluminum production. Today Reynolds Consumer Products (NASDAQ: REYN) buys aluminum foil from commodity aluminum rollers and sells it under the historic Reynolds name. American households using Reynolds Wrap for holiday cooking are buying a product whose aluminum may have originated in Bahrain, Brazil, or Canada -- the domestic aluminum heritage of the brand name has been entirely decoupled from the actual supply chain.
Reynolds Consumer Products Inc. ↗Origin2022
Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil and Hefty trash bags are sold by the same company — both emerged from Reynolds Metals, the 1930s-1950s US aluminum empire that pioneered household foil and later moved into plastic wraps Reynolds Metals Company (founded 1919) became one of the world's largest aluminum producers by WWII, primarily through producing foil for food wrapping. In the 1950s, Reynolds expanded into plastic wraps and bags, leveraging its consumer products distribution. The consumer products division (Reynolds Wrap foil, Hefty bags) was acquired by Alcoa in 2000, then by Rank Group (NZ) in 2004, then sold to private equity. Reynolds Consumer Products IPO'd on Nasdaq in 2020. The company's product portfolio — aluminum foil + plastic trash bags — reflects a historical accident of industrial conglomeration, not a strategic synergy.
