Rijk Zwaan
Rijk Zwaan (De Lier, South Holland, Netherlands; private, family-owned since 1924; approximately €600-700M revenue; CEO Jolanda Doorduin) is one of the world's leading vegetable seed companies. Rijk Zwaan specializes in lettuce (world's #1 or #2 lettuce seed company), cucumber, tomato, radish, and spinach varieties. The company runs 30+ breeding stations globally and has a particularly strong position in the European and North American protected horticulture (greenhouse) market. Rijk Zwaan's De Lier headquarters is approximately 30km from Enza Zaden's Enkhuizen base — both embedded in the Dutch Seed Valley ecosystem. Rijk Zwaan invests approximately 30% of revenue in R&D — one of the highest ratios in the agricultural inputs industry — and exclusively funds development internally without external debt or equity capital.

Origin2023
Rijk Zwaan was founded in 1924 in De Lier, South Holland, by Rijk Zwaan — whose personal name became the company name. De Lier is in the Westland greenhouse district of South Holland, the most intensive horticultural area in the world by value per acre, producing tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and flowers from heated glass greenhouses year-round. Rijk Zwaan grew out of this protected horticulture cluster, developing vegetable varieties specifically for the Dutch greenhouse market before expanding globally. The company has remained private for 101 years and invests approximately 30% of revenue into R&D — one of the highest R&D ratios in the agricultural inputs industry, higher than most pharmaceutical companies as a revenue percentage. This 30% commitment funds a 30+ country breeding station network and has produced a proprietary germplasm collection that no acquirer has been able to purchase: multiple seed industry consolidations (Syngenta, Monsanto, BASF) have sought to acquire Rijk Zwaan, and the family has declined. A family-owned Dutch seed company in a 20,000-person South Holland town, with no debt and no external shareholders, produces the lettuce, cucumber, and radish varieties planted on millions of acres of commercial vegetable farms worldwide.
