Bioceres Crop Solutions (Rizobacter's parent) developed and commercially deployed HB4 drought tolerance — a genetic trait derived from the HaHB4 transcription factor found in sunflowers (Helianthus annuus, which evolved extreme drought tolerance in the Argentine Chaco), inserted into soybeans and wheat via Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. HB4 soybeans are commercially grown in Argentina and Brazil; HB4 wheat (the world's first commercially approved drought-tolerant transgenic wheat) was approved for production in Argentina in 2020 and for consumption/import in Brazil in 2022. The HB4 wheat trait — a sunflower gene that enables wheat plants to continue growing under drought conditions — is upstream of the global wheat supply chain: wheat is the world's most important food calorie source, and drought is its primary production constraint under climate change. An Argentine agricultural biotech company, operating from a Buenos Aires province soybean-inoculant background, developed and commercialized the climate adaptation technology potentially most consequential for global food security over the next 50 years.

Rizobacter Argentina S.A. was founded in 1977 in Pergamino, Buenos Aires province — the geographic center of the Argentine Pampa húmeda (humid pampas), the most productive agricultural land in the Southern Hemisphere and the origin of Argentina's export soybean industry. Pergamino is home to INTA (Instituto Nacional de Tecnología Agropecuaria), Argentina's public agricultural research institute, which provided scientific foundation for rhizobium inoculant technology in Argentina. Rizobacter grew alongside Argentina's transformation into the world's third-largest soybean producer (and largest exporter of soybean meal and oil): as Argentine farmers adopted soybeans in the 1970s-1990s, they adopted Rizobacter's NITRAGIN inoculants to fix atmospheric nitrogen rather than applying synthetic nitrogen fertilizer — giving Argentine soybeans a cost advantage over US corn-belt nitrogen-fertilized crops. Rizobacter is now part of Bioceres Crop Solutions (NASDAQ: BIOX), a US-listed Argentine agricultural biotechnology company that was itself cofounded by Pablo Travato and other Argentine plant scientists.
