Roquette Frères was founded in 1933 in Lestrem, a small commune in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of northern France -- the same industrial agricultural region that was the heart of France's sugar beet and grain processing industry. The Roquette family began processing wheat starch to supply the regional textile and paper industries (starch was a major industrial input for linen and cotton fabric finishing). Over the following decades, Roquette expanded into glucose syrups, sorbitol, and mannitol as the pharmaceutical industry developed demand for derived sugar alcohols. The Lestrem facility grew into one of the largest single starch processing complexes in Europe. Roquette's pivot into plant proteins (pea protein, starting with Nutralys brand in 1970s-1980s for food applications, dramatically scaled after 2010 for plant-based meat) transformed the company from a pharma excipient specialist into one of the strategic suppliers of the plant-based food revolution. A 1933 northern French wheat starch company now supplies both the pharmaceutical grade dextrose in European hospital IV bags AND the pea protein in Beyond Meat burgers -- from the same Lestrem facility, owned by the same Roquette family across three generations.
