RUAG Ammotec is a subsidiary of RUAG Group — the Swiss federal government's defense technology company, formed in 1999 by merging and privatizing the Swiss federal armament and aerospace technology assets. The Thun ammunition facility dates to 1863 as the Swiss federal cartridge factory (Eidgenössische Munitionsfabrik Thun). RUAG later acquired RWS from the German defense conglomerate Dynamit Nobel (2002/2003) — bringing in one of Europe's oldest ammunition brands (founded 1844 as a gunpowder and explosives company, later evolving to sporting and hunting cartridges). RUAG Ammotec thus combines Swiss military precision manufacturing heritage (Thun, since 1863) with German sporting/hunting ammunition heritage (RWS, since 1844) — the oldest ammunition manufacturing traditions in Central Europe under one Swiss federal ownership structure.
