Saint-Gobain was founded in 1665 by Jean-Baptiste Colbert — Louis XIV's finance minister — as Manufacture royale de glaces de miroirs, created specifically to produce glass mirrors for the Palace of Versailles. The Hall of Mirrors (Galerie des Glaces), completed in 1684, remains Saint-Gobain's most famous product. The company has operated continuously for 359 years through the French Revolution, Napoleonic era, the Paris Commune, two World Wars, and the modern industrial era — making it arguably the world's oldest continuously operating industrial company. It has since diversified from luxury mirrors into construction materials, insulation, and specialty high-performance plastics including biopharmaceutical bioprocessing films.

Saint-Gobain's biopharmaceutical film and tubing division emerged from its acquisition of Chemfab Corporation (Bedford NH; gamma-irradiatable films) in 1999 and subsequent development of Tygon biopharmaceutical tubing. The same Saint-Gobain technical center in Corning NY qualifies film for both applications — the institutional knowledge of what makes a cell-culture-compatible film is identical to what makes an IV-compatible film.
