Sartorius Stedim Biotech is the second-largest single-use bioreactor bag manufacturer (behind Cytiva) and competes directly with Cytiva across essentially every biopharma manufacturing application. However, the two companies are not fully substitutable: certain large biopharma customers have validated their processes specifically to either Cytiva Cellbags or Sartorius Biostat bags -- switching requires expensive revalidation. When Cytiva's bags were in shortage during COVID-19, manufacturers could not simply switch to Sartorius without months of validation work. Sartorius AG was founded in 1870 in Göttingen, Germany by Florenz Sartorius as a precision scale manufacturer. For over 130 years, the Sartorius brand was synonymous with high-precision laboratory balances -- the company made the scales that chemists, pharmacists, and researchers used to measure small quantities of material with high accuracy. The bioprocessing business began modestly in the 1980s-90s through acquisitions of filtration and membrane companies. The 2007 acquisition of Stedim SA (French single-use bioprocessing equipment company), which created Sartorius Stedim Biotech as a joint subsidiary, was the transformative pivot. A 19th-century German precision balance company is now the second-largest supplier of the single-use bioreactor bags, filtration capsules, and tangential flow systems that determine whether pharmaceutical companies can scale up biologics manufacturing. The precision engineering culture from 150 years of balance making carried directly into bioreactor bag quality tolerances.
