SCA Group (Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolaget)

HQ SE · Västernorrlandwebsite ↗

Swedish forest industry company (Stockholmsbörsen: SCA, HQ Sundsvall, Västernorrland; ~SEK 23B revenue); Europe's largest private forest owner (2.6 million hectares in northern Sweden) and a major NBSK producer at Östrand pulp mill (Timrå, Sweden — one of the world's largest NBSK mills at 900,000 tonnes/year capacity). SCA also produces containerboard (packaging), solid-wood products, and renewable energy from its forests. SCA split from Essity (formerly SCA Hygiene) in 2017 — Essity became the tissue/hygiene product company (Tork, Lotus brands), while SCA retained the forest, pulp, and paper assets. The world's largest Tork institutional tissue brand buyer and Sweden's largest forest owner used to be the same company; they are now legally separate. SCA's Östrand mill expansion (completed 2018 for €1.1B) doubled capacity and made it Sweden's largest NBSK mill.

  • Did you know2023

SCA Group (Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolaget; Sundsvall, Sweden) owns 2.6 million hectares of boreal forest in northern Sweden — making it Europe's largest private landowner by forest area — and simultaneously produces NBSK pulp (for tissue, printing, and packaging), containerboard (for corrugated boxes), sawn timber (for construction), and renewable energy (biogas and biomass electricity from forest residues). Before 2017, SCA also produced the hygiene products made from its own NBSK pulp — Tork institutional tissue (the rolls in restaurant and hospital dispensers), TENA incontinence products, and Libero diapers. The 2017 split separated SCA (forest/paper/packaging) from Essity (hygiene products) — meaning the Tork tissue rolls dispensed in Swedish offices now travel from SCA's Swedish forests to Essity's tissue mills via a corporate arm's-length supply relationship between two publicly listed Stockholm companies with the same Swedish forest and mill heritage.

  • Origin2023

SCA (Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolaget) was founded in 1929 through the merger of ten Swedish forest and pulp companies, initiated by the Swedish state and the leading Swedish commercial banks (including the Wallenberg-controlled Stockholms Enskilda Bank) to rationalize the fragmented Swedish forest industry during the late 1920s industrial consolidation wave. The founding logic was vertical integration: Swedish forest, Swedish pulp, Swedish paper, all under one company. For 85 years SCA expanded this integration forward — adding tissue (Tork), hygiene products (TENA, Libero), and then personal care. The 2017 split of SCA into two companies (SCA forest/paper and Essity hygiene) reversed that 85-year integration decision — recognizing that NBSK pulp and adult incontinence products required fundamentally different business models. Post-split, SCA reverted to its 1929 essence: a Swedish forest and pulp company, now the world's most capital-efficient NBSK producer with the Östrand mill expansion.
