Sealed Air Corporation
Sealed Air Corporation (Elmwood Park NJ; NYSE: SEE; ~$5.5B revenue; founded 1960 — invented Bubble Wrap) is the world's leading supplier of food packaging films under the Cryovac brand. Sealed Air's Cryovac division produces vacuum packaging films and bags for fresh red meat, processed meats, poultry, and cheese — the dominant packaging format for retail and foodservice meat globally. Cryovac films are multilayer coextruded barrier structures combining PE (LDPE, LLDPE) with EVOH oxygen barrier, nylon, and other polymers. Sealed Air serves virtually all major US and European meat processors (Tyson Foods, JBS, Smithfield). The Cryovac vacuum packaging format — a Sealed Air innovation — extended fresh red meat shelf life from 5-7 days (overwrap film) to 21-28 days, transforming how supermarkets stock and rotate meat. Sealed Air's food packaging solutions are classified as critical food safety infrastructure; Cryovac films are qualified to FDA 21 CFR food contact standards.

Did you know2024
Sealed Air invented Bubble Wrap (protective packaging for consumer electronics, fragile goods) AND owns Cryovac (the dominant vacuum packaging film for fresh red meat, poultry, and cheese at retail). The company is simultaneously the dominant supplier to the electronics e-commerce shipping supply chain (Bubble Wrap cushioning inside Amazon boxes) AND the dominant supplier to the fresh meat retail supply chain (Cryovac bags in the grocery store meat case). These two markets are tracked by entirely different procurement functions at the same retail companies: the store manager buying meat packaging and the distribution center manager buying Amazon shipment supplies are both purchasing from the same Sealed Air entity without recognizing the shared supplier.
Sealed Air Corporation ↗Origin2023
Sealed Air was founded in 1960 by Alfred Fielding and Marc Chavannes, who invented Bubble Wrap while attempting to create a textured wallpaper — accidentally discovering that air-trapped plastic sheets had superior cushioning properties for packaging. The Bubble Wrap product became an iconic commercial success, and Sealed Air grew into a major packaging company. The transformative acquisition came in 1998 when Sealed Air purchased the Cryovac food packaging business from W.R. Grace for $4.9 billion — combining the protective packaging inventor with the world's dominant food vacuum packaging technology. Post-merger, Sealed Air inherited significant asbestos litigation liabilities from the Grace acquisition.
Sealed Air Corporation ↗Concentration2023
Sealed Air Corporation's Cryovac vacuum packaging films are the dominant global packaging format for fresh red meat at retail — and the technology that made the modern retail meat case possible. Before Cryovac vacuum packaging, fresh beef had a retail shelf life of 5-7 days in overwrap film; Cryovac vacuum barrier bags (PE/EVOH/nylon coextrusion, oxygen transmission rate <5 cc/m²/day) extended fresh red meat shelf life to 21-28 days. This shelf life extension enabled: (1) centralized beef fabrication at large meatpacking plants (Tyson Holcomb KS, JBS Greeley CO) rather than local butcher shops; (2) national distribution of pre-cut fresh meat rather than carcass shipping; (3) the modern supermarket meat department. Today, Sealed Air holds an estimated 60-70% global market share in vacuum packaging films for fresh red meat — a near-monopoly position in a segment where the entire modern fresh meat supply chain infrastructure was built around Sealed Air's specific film properties and the Cryovac packaging equipment Sealed Air also supplies. If Sealed Air's Cryovac film supply were disrupted, fresh red meat shelf life would revert to 5-7 days and the centralized meatpacking model would be severely disrupted.
