Sensirion's SFM3000 and SDP31 sensors — the differential pressure and gas flow sensors designed for medical ventilator circuits — became critical components of the COVID-19 emergency ventilator crisis in spring 2020. When hospital ICUs globally ran short of mechanical ventilators and hundreds of organizations attempted emergency ventilator production, Sensirion's SFM gas flow sensors (which measure the inspiratory and expiratory airflow in the ventilator breathing circuit) became a hard constraint: ventilator designs that specified Sensirion sensors were delayed when the Swiss sensor factory's output was insufficient for the sudden 100× demand spike. Sensirion published emergency allocation plans and increased production, but the episode revealed that every ICU ventilator (and therefore the global critical care respiratory capacity for a pandemic) depends on a small Swiss sensor company's MEMS fabrication throughput. The flow sensor that measures how much air a ventilator delivers to an ICU patient runs on the same production line as the differential pressure sensor that monitors HVAC fan efficiency in an office building.

Sensirion was founded in 1998 as a spin-off from ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) by Felix Mayer and Andreas Hierold, commercializing MEMS sensor research from ETH's Physical Electronics Laboratory. Their foundational innovation was CMOS-compatible MEMS process integration — allowing humidity and temperature sensors to be manufactured in standard semiconductor wafer fabs alongside signal conditioning circuitry, dramatically reducing sensor cost and size compared to discrete sensors. Sensirion remained a private family/founder-controlled company for over two decades before its 2019 IPO on the SIX Swiss Exchange. The company's founding in ETH Zurich spinout culture connects it to the Swiss precision instrument tradition (watches, scientific instruments) that has produced a disproportionate share of the world's precision measurement technology from a country of 8 million people.
