Shandong Xinhua Pharmaceutical is the world's largest aspirin API producer — and its largest customer by brand recognition is Bayer AG, the German company that invented aspirin in 1897. Felix Hoffmann, a Bayer chemist in Elberfeld, Germany, synthesized acetylsalicylic acid in stable form in 1897 (building on earlier work by Charles Frederic Gerhardt and Bayer's Heinrich Dreser). Bayer registered the Aspirin trademark and dominated global aspirin sales throughout the early 20th century. After World War I, Bayer lost the Aspirin trademark in the United States, United Kingdom, France, and Russia as part of war reparations in the Treaty of Versailles. Now — a century later — Bayer AG purchases aspirin active pharmaceutical ingredient from Shandong Xinhua in China. The company that invented aspirin, lost its trademark as war reparations, and rebuilt its brand identity around aspirin for 120 years now buys the API from a Chinese state enterprise. The pharmaceutical supply chain has reversed the direction of technology flow: German invention → Chinese production → German brand.

Shandong Xinhua Pharmaceutical (Zibo, Shandong; founded 1943 as a state factory during the Sino-Japanese War; SZSE: 000756) is simultaneously: (1) world's largest aspirin producer (~45% global capacity); (2) China's largest penicillin G (penicillin core) producer; (3) a significant producer of ampicillin, amoxicillin, and other beta-lactam antibiotics. The same Zibo, Shandong facility that makes nearly half the world's aspirin also makes a significant fraction of global penicillin — the antibiotic that has saved more lives than any other drug in history. Shandong Xinhua illustrates how Chinese pharmaceutical API concentration spans both 'old' analgesic drugs (aspirin, 127 years old) and foundational antibiotics (penicillin, discovered 1928). A single production disruption at the Zibo facility — from fire, explosion (fine chemical manufacturing hazard), environmental shutdown, or labor action — would simultaneously affect global aspirin and global antibiotic supply, two entirely independent pharmaceutical supply chains that share the same factory.
