Shanshan Energy Technology Co., Ltd.

HQ CN · Hunanwebsite ↗

Chinese battery materials company (SZSE: 600884; HQ Changsha, Hunan; parent Shanshan Corporation); world's 2nd-largest battery anode material manufacturer (~18% global share) and also a significant cathode material producer. Shanshan Energy (formerly Putailai New Energy Technology / Shanghai Putailai) produces synthetic graphite anodes for Li-ion batteries via petroleum needle coke graphitization. Shanshan Corporation (parent) is a Ningbo-based conglomerate historically known for fashion retail (Shanshan men's suits) that pivoted massively into lithium battery materials in the early 2000s — becoming one of China's first and largest EV battery material companies while its parent still sells business suits. The same Chinese conglomerate that makes business suits also makes the graphite anode material inside CATL and LG Energy Solution batteries.

  • Did you know2024

Shanshan Corporation is a Ningbo conglomerate whose revenue is dominated by lithium battery anode and cathode materials — it is the world's second-largest synthetic graphite anode producer (behind BTR New Energy Materials) with approximately 18% global market share, supplying CATL, LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI, and Panasonic. What makes Shanshan extraordinary is that its parent company has never exited the men's fashion business that originally funded the battery materials pivot. Today, the same Shanshan Corporation corporate entity whose synthetic graphite anode material sits inside your electric car also sells men's business suits in Chinese department stores. The battery materials business (Shanshan Energy, SZSE: 600884) and the fashion business operate under the same Ningbo holding company. This is among the most improbable corporate dual-identities in global supply chains: a men's suit brand that became a critical enabler of the global EV battery supply chain without most EV industry participants knowing the connection.

  • Origin2023

Shanshan Corporation was founded in Ningbo, Zhejiang in 1989 by Zheng Yonggang as a fashion company — initially manufacturing and selling men's suits under the Shanshan brand. By the mid-1990s, Shanshan men's suits were among the best-known Chinese professional menswear brands. In 2000, Zheng made a highly contrarian pivot: he invested Shanshan Corporation's fashion profits into lithium battery anode materials — a nascent market with no obvious connection to clothing. The year 2000 was before China's EV ambitions were articulated, before CATL existed, before lithium batteries dominated consumer electronics. Zheng's bet on battery materials in 2000 required predicting that lithium-ion batteries would become a massive industrial commodity over the following 20 years. By 2020, the battery materials business dwarfed Shanshan's fashion operations, but the company still sells men's suits.
