Shell Chemicals (LyondellBasell JV at Deer Park)
Shell's chemical operations at Deer Park TX (HQ London, NYSE: SHEL). The Deer Park refinery and chemical complex (Shell Chemical LP) on the Houston Ship Channel produces hexane from refinery naphtha fractions. In 2023 Shell completed the sale of its 50% stake in the Deer Park refinery to PEMEX (Mexico's national oil company, which had held the other 50%), making it a PEMEX-controlled facility. Shell Chemicals at Deer Park continues to process naphtha into petrochemicals including hexane solvents. The site is one of the largest integrated refinery-chemical complexes in the US (340,000 bpd refining capacity + chemical units).

Hexane produced at Deer Park and other Gulf Coast refineries is the extraction solvent for ~90% of all vegetable oil production globally (soybean oil, canola oil, sunflower oil). The petroleum refinery is thus a hidden critical input to the global food oil supply chain — the same n-hexane that comes off a crude oil distillation column ends up in the tank of a soybean crushing plant that produces the soybean oil in your salad dressing. The same hexane also serves as an industrial rubber adhesive solvent (shoe manufacturing, tire bonding), a pharmaceutical extraction solvent, and a cleaning agent for precision electronics. A Gulf Coast hexane supply disruption (hurricane, regulatory action, refinery outage) simultaneously affects food oil production, footwear manufacturing, and pharmaceutical processing.

Shell's Deer Park complex on the Houston Ship Channel has operated since the 1920s, growing to be one of the Gulf Coast's largest integrated refinery-petrochemical sites. The Deer Park refinery processes naphtha into multiple product streams, including the hexane fractions used in food oil extraction. In 2023, Shell completed the sale of its 50% stake in the Deer Park refinery to PEMEX (Mexico's national oil company), giving PEMEX a significant US Gulf Coast refining presence. The Shell Chemicals operations at Deer Park (including hexane and petrochemical production) are related through LyondellBasell JV structures to the broader Gulf Coast chemical cluster.
