In November 2020, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) issued a Withhold Release Order (WRO) against Sime Darby Plantation for forced labor concerns — specifically debt bondage and passport confiscation for Bangladeshi and Indonesian migrant workers harvesting palm oil in Sabah, Malaysia. The WRO blocked Sime Darby palm oil and downstream products from entering the United States under 19 USC 1307, which prohibits import of goods produced by forced labor. Sime Darby Plantation is the world's largest listed palm oil plantation company; a WRO against them affects not only their direct exports but the entire Malaysian palm oil supply chain's credibility with US buyers. The WRO was eventually lifted in September 2022 after Sime Darby implemented remediation programs including fee reimbursement for migrant workers and enhanced labor monitoring.
