    Solar Turbines was founded in 1927 in San Diego as Solar Aircraft Company — an aircraft components manufacturer that, during World War II, produced aircraft parts for the US military. After the war, as the US jet age created excess gas turbine engineering talent, Solar pivoted from aircraft components to small industrial gas turbines. The critical insight was that the same thermodynamic cycles used in aircraft jet engines — axial compressor, combustion chamber, axial turbine — could be packaged for stationary industrial applications. The US postwar pipeline boom created a perfect market: thousands of compressor stations along new natural gas transmission lines needed power sources, and Solar's industrial gas turbine packages fit precisely. Solar's Mars and Titan turbines became the industry standard for large-diameter pipeline compression stations across the Transco, Tennessee Gas, and Texas Eastern systems. Caterpillar acquired Solar in 1981, adding turbine power to its diesel power equipment portfolio. A San Diego aircraft parts company that retooled after WWII now has 15,000 turbines installed globally and maintains a lock-in position on US natural gas transmission infrastructure — because replacement of installed Solar turbines with competitors' equipment requires complete station redesign.
