Solvay SA was founded in 1861 in Couillet, Belgium by Ernest Solvay, who invented the ammonia-soda process (Solvay process) for manufacturing synthetic soda ash from salt and limestone. The Solvay process was the most important chemical manufacturing innovation of the 19th century -- it replaced the Leblanc process and made soda ash inexpensive enough to enable mass-market glass, soap, and chemical production. Solvay built a global industrial chemicals empire from this one process innovation: the company today operates in specialty polymers, specialty chemicals, soda ash, and -- following the €3.4B acquisition of Rhodia in 2011 -- rare earth processing. Rhodia brought the La Rochelle facility, which had been a Rhone-Poulenc rare earth processing site before successive corporate restructurings landed it in Rhodia. The La Rochelle cerium oxide polishing business is a direct descendant of France's postwar rare earth processing ambitions when Europe processed rare earth oxides from African (Madagascar, Congo) and South Asian (India, Sri Lanka) monazite sand. A Belgian company that invented soda ash in 1861 is now one of the few Western sources of optical-grade cerium oxide polishing compound outside China -- by accident of acquisition, not strategic design.

Solvay's La Rochelle facility (via Rhodia, acquired 2011) produces CEROX® cerium oxide polishing compounds — making Solvay one of the only Western-world sources of polishing-grade CeO₂ outside China. This is the same Solvay that: (1) invented synthetic soda ash in 1861 (still makes it today, now mining Wyoming trona); (2) holds a 24.9% stake in Carl Zeiss SMT (EUV optics monopoly); and (3) supplies specialty chemicals for lithium batteries and pharmaceuticals. Solvay La Rochelle in particular has a history of rare earth processing going back to when it was operated as a Rhodia rare earth oxide plant — it remains one of the rare facilities outside China capable of making high-purity cerium polishing compounds to optical specification.
