  Sonoco Products Company was founded in 1899 in Hartsville, South Carolina as the Southern Novelty Company, making paper bobbins for the South Carolina textile industry — which was at its 19th-century peak turning Piedmont cotton into yarn and cloth. The company's name contraction (Southern Novelty → Sonoco) accompanied its transformation from a regional textile supply company into the world's dominant paper tube and core manufacturer. As South Carolina's textile mills shuttered and moved offshore during the 20th century, Sonoco pivoted its tube expertise to the booming film, foil, and paper converting industries: the same paper spiral-winding technology used for yarn bobbins was applied to aluminum foil rolls, adhesive tape rolls, plastic film rolls, and paper rolls. Sonoco's SONOTUBE concrete forming tube — introduced mid-20th century for residential and commercial column forming — became so ubiquitous in construction that "Sonotube" is now a genericized trademark (used generically for all concrete forming tubes, regardless of manufacturer, the way "Kleenex" is used for all facial tissue). Sonoco is headquartered in Hartsville, SC to this day — one of the few Fortune 500 companies still headquartered in the small Southern city where it was founded 125 years ago.
