Origin2023
Sotera Health (the parent company of Sterigenics) went public on Nasdaq in November 2020 — in the same month that Illinois courts were actively handling cancer lawsuits from residents near the company's Willowbrook, Illinois EO sterilization facility. Sterigenics had operated an EO sterilization plant in suburban Willowbrook, Illinois that was associated with elevated cancer rates (particularly Hodgkin's lymphoma) in the surrounding community; Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan sued Sterigenics in 2019 and the company temporarily closed the Willowbrook facility. More than 800 Willowbrook-area residents have sued Sterigenics, with settlements and judgments exceeding $840M in aggregate liability. The decision to IPO during active cancer litigation — raising approximately $1.1B for the private equity owners (Warburg Pincus and GTCR) — while simultaneously running a business whose services are critical to the US medical device supply chain (there is no viable substitute for EO sterilization of many temperature-sensitive implants and devices) represented an unusual intersection of public health harm, private equity monetization, and critical healthcare infrastructure. The Willowbrook closure itself caused a 2019 supply constraint for sterile medical devices as manufacturers scrambled to find alternative sterilization capacity.
