  • Origin2023

Specialty Granules was founded in the early 20th century in Hagerstown, Maryland — a city in the Cumberland Valley at the base of the South Mountain ridge of the Appalachians. The Cumberland Valley running northeast-southwest from Pennsylvania through Maryland contains some of the most economically valuable limestone deposits in the eastern US, and the South Mountain ridge quartzite and other mineral deposits provided the specific stone characteristics needed for roofing granules: sufficient hardness to resist crushing and weathering, appropriate mineral composition for ceramic coating adhesion, and the right particle size distribution for asphalt shingle embedment. SGI developed the ceramic coating process that gives modern asphalt shingles their varied colors — the gray, brown, green, and blend colors that dominate residential roofing in North America are applied in SGI's ceramic kilns before the granules are shipped to shingle manufacturers. GAF, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed depend on SGI and the three other US roofing granule suppliers (3M, IKO, and Lignified Stone) for the protective mineral surface that determines both the color and the fire resistance of asphalt shingles. SGI's Maryland quarrying operations supply the visual appearance of millions of American homes — the color visible from satellite images of suburban neighborhoods is substantially determined by SGI's coating chemistry.
