A large power transformer (LPT) at a 500kV substation steps down transmission voltage for distribution to cities, military bases, hospitals, and data centers -- the same transformer design serves civilian power consumers, US military installations, and nuclear power plants. Each LPT weighs 200-800 metric tons, requires 1-2 years to manufacture, and costs $3-10 million. The US has roughly 2,000 high-voltage LPTs in service; the few domestic manufacturers including SPX have a combined production capacity of perhaps 100-150 units per year. A coordinated physical attack on 9 key US transmission substations was estimated by the DHS (Operation Aurora assessment) to cause a nationwide blackout lasting 18 months, because replacement LPTs would require years-long queues at the handful of remaining domestic manufacturers. SPX Transformer Solutions' Waukesha facility is simultaneously a civilian power infrastructure company and a national defense asset whose disruption would cripple US grid resilience.

SPX Transformer Solutions (formerly Waukesha Electric Systems) traces its manufacturing heritage to the Waukesha, Wisconsin facility that has been making electrical transformers since 1917 -- over a century of continuous transformer production at the same location. Waukesha Electric became a subsidiary of SPX Corporation, a diversified industrial conglomerate, and is one of the last remaining US-based manufacturers of large power transformers (LPTs). The US once had over 15 domestic LPT manufacturers; today fewer than 5 US-based manufacturers produce transformers for the highest voltage classes (345kV and above) that form the backbone of the US high-voltage transmission grid. SPX's backlog extended to 3+ years as of 2024 as AI data center buildout, offshore wind interconnection, and electric vehicle grid upgrades drove unprecedented transformer demand simultaneously -- the same 107-year-old Wisconsin facility that makes industrial civilization run is now oversubscribed by the technologies designed to transform it.
