Starfrost Ltd. (Lowestoft, Suffolk, UK; private) is a British IQF tunnel and spiral freezer manufacturer serving mid-tier food processors globally. Starfrost designs and manufactures the Whirlwind and Cobra tunnel freezer ranges as well as spiral freezers for poultry, seafood, and vegetable processing. Founded 1991 as a management buyout from APV Baker (UK food equipment). Starfrost specializes in stainless steel IQF equipment with ammonia or HFO refrigerant systems; exports to US, Australia, Europe, and Asia. A smaller-scale alternative to JBT and GEA for food processors seeking UK-manufactured or lower-throughput equipment. Part of Ashburn International (food processing equipment group).

  • Did you know2024

Starfrost's IQF tunnel and spiral freezers serve the seafood supply chain (their heritage market), but the same equipment designs are installed in UK poultry processing lines, vegetable (pea, bean, sweetcorn) processing, bakery (par-baked goods), and prepared meals manufacturing. The freezer manufacturer's customer base spans every major chilled/frozen food supply chain in the UK and internationally. A supply constraint on Starfrost's engineering capacity or specialized stainless steel fabrication would simultaneously slow freezing capacity additions in seafood, poultry, vegetables, and bakery — four separate food retail supply chains depending on one Suffolk engineering workshop's output.

  • Origin2023

Starfrost Ltd. was founded and remains based in Lowestoft, Suffolk — one of England's most historically significant fishing ports and the southernmost point of the UK. Lowestoft was the center of the British North Sea cod and herring fishing industry, which collapsed in the 1970s-80s following the Cod Wars with Iceland and overfishing. Starfrost emerged from this industrial heritage as an equipment manufacturer serving the seafood processing sector as it transitioned from fresh to frozen fish — the decline of Lowestoft's fishing fleet ironically created the frozen fish processing infrastructure (freezer manufacturers, cold stores) that Starfrost grew to serve.
