Producer
Sumitomo Precision Products Co., Ltd.
Japanese precision engineering company (TSE: 6355, HQ Amagasaki, Hyogo; Sumitomo Group subsidiary); manufactures brazed aluminum heat exchangers (BAHX) for cryogenic applications including air separation units and LNG liquefaction, alongside aerospace hydraulic components and aircraft landing gear actuation systems. Sumitomo Precision Products is one of only four companies worldwide capable of producing ASU-grade BAHX, supplying Japanese industrial gas companies (Taiyo Nippon Sanso/Matheson, Air Products Japan) and export markets. The same Sumitomo Precision facility that makes landing gear actuators for commercial aircraft (Boeing, Airbus) also makes the cryogenic heat exchangers at the heart of air separation units. Sumitomo Precision Products is part of the Sumitomo conglomerate — which includes Sumitomo Metal Mining (nickel hydroxide for NiMH batteries), Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (banking), and Sumitomo Electric Industries (wiring harnesses).

Sumitomo Precision Products manufactures BAHX for cryogenic air separation units (which produce the industrial oxygen, nitrogen, and neon that semiconductor fabs, hospitals, and steel mills depend on) AND aircraft landing gear actuators and hydraulic systems for Boeing and Airbus commercial aircraft. The industrial gas supply chain and commercial aviation safety both depend on the same Amagasaki, Hyogo Japanese precision engineering facility. An earthquake in the Kobe/Hyogo region (a seismically active zone -- the 1995 Great Hanshin earthquake devastated Kobe and affected multiple Sumitomo Group facilities) would simultaneously disrupt BAHX production for industrial gas capacity expansion AND aircraft hydraulic component supply for Boeing and Airbus MRO and new aircraft production. Industrial gas companies planning ASU expansions and commercial aviation OEMs building new aircraft share a Japanese supplier whose geographic seismic risk neither supply chain's planners typically factor into their risk models.
Sumitomo Precision Products Co., Ltd. ↗Origin2023
Sumitomo Precision Products is part of the Sumitomo Group, one of Japan's oldest keiretsu, whose copper mining and trading origins trace to 1590 in Osaka when Sumitomo Masatomo began a bookshop and medicine business that evolved into copper trading. The Sumitomo industrial group's Amagasaki precision engineering operations (in Hyogo Prefecture, adjacent to Kobe) grew from Japan's postwar industrial reconstruction in the 1950s-1960s, when precision manufacturing for aviation and industrial applications became a focus of Japanese export strategy. Sumitomo Precision Products developed both its cryogenic heat exchanger capability and its aerospace hydraulic system capability in parallel, serving both the emerging Japanese industrial gas industry and the global commercial aviation supply chain (Boeing and Airbus). The company's position as one of only four global BAHX producers at full ASU scale gives it a structural supply chain position in industrial gas production equipment -- a market with extremely high qualification barriers and 18-24 month equipment lead times.
