Sumitomo Wiring Systems is the automotive harness subsidiary of Sumitomo Electric Industries — the Japanese wire and cable company whose copper wire operations trace directly to the Besshi Copper Mine in Niihama, Ehime Prefecture, which the Sumitomo family operated from 1691 to 1973. Sumitomo Electric established its automotive wiring harness division as Japanese automakers grew through the postwar economic miracle, eventually becoming the world's second-largest automotive harness manufacturer behind Yazaki. The same Sumitomo family business that mined copper in feudal Japan for 282 years now supplies the copper wiring harnesses in Toyota, Honda, and Nissan vehicles from 400+ subsidiaries across 30+ countries. Sumitomo Wiring Systems built its global production network on a "local-for-local" strategy: harnesses are produced near the automotive assembly plant they supply, following OEM customers into each new market rather than shipping finished harnesses internationally (their size and fragility make long-distance shipping impractical). The Sumitomo copper mining heritage and the automotive harness production represent the complete vertical supply chain: from extracting copper from an Edo-period Shikoku mine to wiring the cars driving on 21st-century roads.
