Sunresin has developed lithium selective adsorbent (LSA) sorbents for Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) — a technology that selectively extracts dissolved lithium from geothermal brines, oilfield produced water, and salt lake brines using ion sieving adsorbents rather than conventional solar evaporation ponds. The Salton Sea Known Geothermal Resource Area in Imperial Valley, California is estimated to contain enough geothermal brine lithium to supply 40% of US EV battery demand domestically (US Department of Energy estimate: 18+ million metric tons LCE equivalent). DLE from Salton Sea brines using lithium adsorbent sorbents is commercially active (Controlled Thermal Resources, EnergySource Minerals), with the adsorbent material being the critical enabling technology. Sunresin's LSA sorbents compete with sorbents from other Chinese suppliers (Lithium Australia, POSCO Holdings' ORP technology) in what is potentially the enabling material for US domestic lithium production independence — but the dominant adsorbent sorbent technology and supply is currently Chinese-sourced, meaning US "domestic" lithium production from geothermal brines may structurally depend on Chinese adsorbent supply.

Sunresin New Materials Co., Ltd. was founded in 1999 in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province — China's ancient Tang Dynasty capital and now a major Chinese center for materials science and chemical engineering education (Xi'an Jiaotong University, Northwestern Polytechnical University, and Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology all have materials chemistry programs). Sunresin commercialized ion exchange and adsorption resin technology initially for pharmaceutical antibiotics purification in China's large-scale antibiotic manufacturing sector, then expanded into water treatment and metallurgical applications. The company listed on ChiNext (Shenzhen's growth board) in 2016 and has grown into one of China's largest ion exchange resin producers, with its Seplite brand becoming the dominant domestic brand competing with multinational suppliers Dow, Lanxess, and Mitsubishi Chemical.
