Solvay's Fluorine Chemistry business — now within Syensqo — produces pharmaceutical- and personal-care-grade sodium fluoride, potassium fluoride, and fluoride intermediates at its Panoli facility in Gujarat, India (Bharuch district). Panoli is one of the few ISO-certified, pharmaceutical-grade NaF production sites outside China, making Syensqo a key supplier to multinational toothpaste manufacturers requiring high-purity certified fluoride actives. Syensqo also produces advanced PVDF fluoropolymers and specialty fluorinated solvents — a highly diversified fluorine chemistry portfolio.

Syensqo was created in late 2023 as a spinoff of Solvay SA — a Belgian company founded in 1863 by Ernest Solvay, who invented the ammonia-soda process (Solvay process) for producing soda ash from common salt and limestone. The Solvay process replaced the highly polluting Leblanc process and dramatically reduced the cost of sodium carbonate, which was essential for soap, glass, and textile production. The invention made Ernest Solvay enormously wealthy; he used the proceeds to fund what became the Solvay Conferences — the famous physics meetings in Brussels where Einstein, Curie, Bohr, Heisenberg, and other founders of quantum mechanics gathered in the 1910s-1930s. A 160-year-old soda ash company is directly linked to the intellectual history of quantum mechanics through its founder's philanthropy. Solvay diversified into fluorine chemistry, PVC, and specialty materials over the 20th century, and the 2023 spinoff of its specialty materials into Syensqo separated the commodity soda ash business (retained by Solvay) from the higher-margin specialties including PVDF fluoropolymers, composite materials, and pharmaceutical fluoride actives.

Syensqo's Panoli, India facility is one of only a small number of sites globally producing pharmaceutical-grade sodium fluoride (USP/BP specification) outside of China. Oral care brands including Colgate-Palmolive, Unilever, and Haleon (Sensodyne) that require certified-origin or non-Chinese-sourced fluoride actives have very limited qualified alternative suppliers. The combination of pharmaceutical specification requirements and non-Chinese origin creates a highly constrained supply pool for premium oral care NaF — in practice, Syensqo Panoli, Honeywell Geismar, and Mexichem Fluor Runcorn collectively serve the majority of this certified-origin market.
