Tait Communications (Christchurch, New Zealand; subsidiary of Codan Limited, Australia, ASX: CDA since December 2022 acquisition) is a global P25 LMR infrastructure vendor serving international markets and US second-tier agencies. Tait's P25 infrastructure portfolio includes the Tait DMR and P25 base stations, site controllers, and network management software. Tait is notable for interoperability with both Motorola and L3Harris systems, making it a preferred vendor in markets where agencies want to avoid single-vendor lock-in. Founded 1969 in Christchurch by Sir Angus Tait; manufactured New Zealand's first commercial two-way radios. Codan acquired Tait for AUD 225M (approximately USD 155M) in December 2022.

Codan Limited (Tait's Australian parent company) is simultaneously: (1) a P25 public safety radio infrastructure supplier (via Tait) for US police and fire agencies; (2) an HF radio manufacturer serving gold mining operations in West Africa (Codan Micom HF radios), where they provide the primary communication link for mines without cellular coverage; (3) a military HF and SATCOM radio supplier for defense forces; and (4) a radio equipment provider for humanitarian and NGO organizations (UNHCR, MSF) operating in conflict zones and disaster areas. The public safety communications supply chain, the African mining communications supply chain, military communications, and humanitarian relief communications all converge at the same Australian-New Zealand radio company.

  • Incident2022

In December 2022, Codan Limited (Australia; ASX: CDA) acquired Tait Communications for AUD 225 million (approximately USD 155 million). Tait had been New Zealand's most important technology export in the radio communications space for over 50 years. The acquisition raised supply chain continuity concerns for Tait's US and international government customers: Codan is primarily a HF/specialized radio company, and its product roadmap priorities differ from Tait's P25 infrastructure focus. Several US agencies that had been evaluating Tait ASTRO-compliant infrastructure as an alternative to Motorola paused procurement pending clarity on Codan's Tait product roadmap. The consolidation reduced the number of independent P25 infrastructure vendors from four to effectively three (Motorola, L3Harris, Codan/Tait+Zetron), narrowing competitive options for US public safety agencies seeking to avoid Motorola sole-source contracts.

  • Origin2023

Tait Communications was founded in 1982 in Christchurch, New Zealand by Sir Angus Tait — a New Zealand radio engineer who had worked at Philips and Motorola before starting his own company. Tait built the company into New Zealand's largest electronics manufacturer and Christchurch's dominant employer, becoming the Canterbury region's most significant industrial success story. The 2011 Christchurch earthquakes damaged Tait's facilities and disrupted operations, but the company rebuilt. In December 2022, Australian electronics company Codan Limited (ASX: CDA) acquired Tait for AUD $102 million, integrating the New Zealand P25 infrastructure vendor with Codan's HF radio and remote communications business.
