Takara Bio Inc. is a subsidiary of Takara Holdings (Takara Shuzo Co., Ltd.) -- a Kyoto-based sake brewery founded in 1842 during Japan's Edo period. Takara Shuzo is one of Japan's largest sake producers (Shochikubai brand) and has operated sake fermentation using traditional Aspergillus mold and yeast cultures for 180+ years. The biotechnology division was founded to commercialize the microbiology and fermentation expertise from the sake business, initially focusing on enzyme production for food and pharmaceutical applications.
