TAPI (Teva API) is the dedicated API business of Teva Pharmaceutical Industries — the world's largest generic drug company, headquartered in Petah Tikva, Israel. Teva was founded in 1901 in Jerusalem as a small wholesale drug distributor; the generic business grew through Israel's unique pharmaceutical ecosystem (Israeli army's need for self-sufficient drug supply during wars; Israel's small domestic market forcing international ambition). Teva became the dominant global generics company through a series of acquisitions including Barr Pharmaceuticals (2008), Ratiopharm (2010), and Allergan Generics (2016) for USD 40.5 billion — the Allergan acquisition, made at the peak of pharma deal valuations, proved catastrophic: drug price deflation in the US collapsed Teva's revenue shortly after the deal closed; the company's stock fell ~80% in 2017; CEO left; massive layoffs and restructuring followed. Teva also became the largest single defendant in the national US opioid litigation (settling for USD 4.25 billion in 2023 for its role in supplying oxycodone and other opioids). The largest generic drug company in the world nearly collapsed from two simultaneous crises: market price deflation AND opioid liability.
