Both the pacemaker feedthrough and the missile guidance connector must maintain electrical isolation in corrosive environments for decades without failure. The manufacturing process for a pacemaker implantable connector and a Trident II SLBM (submarine-launched ballistic missile) avionics connector overlap in material selection, leak testing standards, and hermetic seal design — the medical implant supply chain and the nuclear deterrent supply chain converge at TE Connectivity's hermetic sealing production lines.

    TE Connectivity was born from one of the most complex corporate conglomerate dissolutions in business history. AMP Inc. — founded in 1941 to develop solderless electrical terminals for US Army aircraft during WWII — became the world's largest connector company. Tyco International acquired AMP in 1999 for $12B (over opposition from AMP's management). Tyco's CEO Dennis Kozlowski then ran Tyco as a serial acquirer until 2002 when Kozlowski was arrested for fraud and the Tyco corporate scandal broke. Tyco split into three independent companies in 2007: ADT (security), Covidien (medical), and Tyco Electronics (now TE Connectivity). The connector business that started as WWII aircraft terminal technology survived a corporate fraud scandal, emerged as an independent company, and became the world's largest connector maker — its origin in wartime aircraft manufacturing giving it the foundation for both consumer electronics and defense connectors that are used in every F-35 fighter jet avionics system today.
