Did you know2024
Tenaris OCTG casing pipe — the seamless steel pipe that lines oil and gas wellbores to prevent collapse and enable safe production — is the identical product specification used for geothermal energy well casing. Enhanced geothermal system (EGS) wells drilled in hot rock at depths of 3-15km use the same J55, P110, and Q125 grade seamless casing as oil and gas wells: identical API threading, identical pressure and temperature ratings, identical metallurgy. The US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) extended a 30% investment tax credit to geothermal energy projects, triggering a wave of enhanced geothermal development (Fervo Energy, Quaise Energy, AltaRock). Tenaris — the world's largest OCTG producer, whose demand has historically tracked oil rig counts — now supplies both the fossil fuel drilling industry and the renewable geothermal energy industry with the same casing pipe product, from the same Bay City Texas mill, to the same API 5CT specification. An oil drilling boom and a geothermal drilling expansion can compete for the same Tenaris casing pipe production capacity simultaneously.
Tenaris S.A. ↗Origin2024
Tenaris's lineage begins with Agostino Rocca (1895-1978), an Italian engineer who in 1934 took control of Dalmine, the Italian seamless pipe company whose mill had been built by the German steel conglomerate Mannesmann. After World War II, Rocca moved to Argentina and founded the Techint Group (Técnica Internacional), building an industrial empire that combined Argentine metallurgy with Italian engineering expertise. The Techint Group's seamless pipe assets — Dalmine in Italy, Siderca in Argentina, NKKTubes in Japan (acquired), and IPSCO Tubulars in the US (acquired 2008) — were consolidated into Tenaris and listed on the NYSE in 2001. Tenaris is today the world's largest seamless OCTG producer and a top-3 global seamless tube producer, with roots in an Italian immigrant industrialist's Argentine steel-making ambition that began in the wreckage of post-WWII Europe.
Tenaris S.A. ↗Concentration2024
Tenaris holds approximately 35-40% of the US OCTG market in active drilling periods, making it the single largest supplier of the steel casing and tubing that goes into every US oil and gas well. The US OCTG market is concentrated among Tenaris, US Steel Tubular (USS), and imports from Korea (SeAH, NEXTEEL), with Russian TMK effectively excluded since 2022 sanctions. Tenaris's Bay City, Texas mill (opened 2016, $1.8 billion investment) is the most modern seamless pipe mill in the Western Hemisphere, producing premium OCTG for the Permian, Eagle Ford, and Appalachian shale basins. When US drilling activity collapses (2020 COVID demand shock, 2015-2016 oil price crash), Tenaris's fixed-cost heavy mill operations absorb significant losses — the US shale industry's drilling activity and Tenaris's financial health are directly coupled.
