Casa Herradura was founded in 1870 by Félix López in Amatitán, Jalisco — four years before Mexico's first official demarcation of the tequila production zone. Herradura operated continuously as a family enterprise (the Romo family after the López family) for 137 years until Brown-Forman's 2007 acquisition. Herradura's contribution to tequila history is the reposado category: in 1974, Herradura began resting its silver tequila for 45 days in American white oak barrels — creating what became the "reposado" (rested) style that is now the dominant tequila category globally. Before Herradura's 1974 innovation, tequila was either unaged (blanco) or extended-aged (añejo); the intermediate reposado category existed because of Herradura's experiment. Brown-Forman's acquisition brought Herradura's barrels into the same supply chain as Jack Daniel's: Brown-Forman's Kentucky cooperage now produces barrels for both its Tennessee whiskey and its Jalisco tequila brands.
