On August 3, 2012, a salt cavern operated by Texas Brine Company on the Napoleonville Salt Dome (Assumption Parish, Louisiana) collapsed — causing the Bayou Corne sinkhole that displaced ~350 residents and grew to 37 acres and 750+ feet deep by 2024. A 2018 court found OxyChem 50% at fault, Texas Brine 35%, and Vulcan Materials 15% — ruling all three 'put economic interests over environmental and safety concerns' and ignored warnings from 1976. Texas Brine has paid over $225 million in costs. New Louisiana regulations now prohibit TBC from mining new caverns on the Napoleonville property, and TBC sued Dow Chemical over mineral rights disputes that blocked expansion. The same Napoleonville dome supplies Dow's Plaquemine chlor-alkali complex.
