Thermo Fisher manufactures the multilayer LLDPE/EVOH films used in its own HyPerforma bioreactor bags AND sells the same film to competitor Cytiva (for some Cytiva bag products) and potentially Sartorius Stedim. This makes Thermo Fisher simultaneously a competitor in the finished bioreactor bag market AND a supplier of the key raw material to its competitors -- a strategic position analogous to Owens Corning supplying fiberglass mat to GAF shingles. Thermo Fisher Scientific was created from the 2006 merger of Thermo Electron Corporation (founded 1956 by Peter Nick Metz at MIT) and Fisher Scientific International (founded 1902 by Chester Fisher in Pittsburgh to supply chemicals and equipment to area universities). Fisher Scientific grew by catalog distribution of lab supplies; Thermo Electron grew by manufacturing scientific instruments spun out from academic research. The 2006 merger created the world's largest scientific instrument and laboratory supply company at ~$11B revenue at the time. Since then, Thermo Fisher has spent approximately $50B on acquisitions (Life Technologies 2014 for $13.6B, PPD 2021 for $21.4B, among others), becoming a $43B revenue conglomerate that supplies instruments, reagents, manufacturing equipment, and clinical services to the same biopharma customers. The Fisher Scientific laboratory supply catalog, which Chester Fisher started to serve Pittsburgh academics, now sells everything from centrifuge tubes to the single-use bioreactor bags that produce the drugs those tubes help test.
