The cell culture media for virtually every FDA-approved monoclonal antibody manufactured in North America was originally formulated by researchers sourcing from a company started by two scientists in a small town near Niagara Falls in 1953. The 2014 Thermo Fisher/Life Technologies merger — which received regulatory clearance with minimal remedies — created a dominant position in cell culture media that FDA's biologics review process subsequently locked in by accepting Gibco-formulated media in thousands of BLA submissions.
