    Tokuyama Corporation was founded in 1918 in Tokuyama, Yamaguchi Prefecture -- a coastal location selected for access to ocean water (for chlor-alkali brine electrolysis) and marine shipping. The company started with soda ash production using the Solvay process and expanded through the 20th century into chlorine chemistry and specialty chemicals. The semiconductor polysilicon business developed in the 1970s when Japan's emerging semiconductor industry needed ultra-pure silicon that went beyond what standard metallurgical silicon could provide. Tokuyama developed purification processes reaching 12N+ purity (99.9999999999%) through proprietary chlorosilane reduction chemistry. Today Tokuyama is one of only three or four companies globally capable of producing semiconductor-grade polysilicon to specification -- alongside Hemlock Semiconductor (US), Wacker Chemie (Germany), and OCI (Korea). A 1918 Yamaguchi Prefecture soda ash company is now one of the critical gatekeepers for the silicon supply chain of the world's semiconductor industry.
